About Us

Starting Summer 2016, local non-profit theatre organization - Claude McNeal Productions - will partner with performing arts students at IUPUI and other local universities, students and theatre department faculty at the acclaimed local charter school - Herron High School, and professional artists from all over the Indianapolis community, to present the inauguration of a new semi-professional summer stock theatre program – the Indiana Performing Arts Initiative at Herron High School!

This semi-professional summer theater training program for young artists in high school and college will also feature professional actors, directors, designers, and choreographers –all from the Indianapolis area - rounding out this unique opportunity for all those interested in the performing arts.

  • high school and college students from all over will have the opportunity to hone their craft while working with professionals currently working in the field.  Internship and apprenticeship positions in theatre administration and production will include:
  • production assistants, stage management, set & prop design and construction, marketing & promotions, box office, group sales and more!

This initiative will help to bolster the enthusiasm for future students to seek continuing

education in the performing arts in Indianapolis. It will encompass theatre professionals working alongside high school and college students to retain their interest in the performing arts, and will include intensive daily workshops and rehearsals, culminating in two fully-mounted mainstage productions each summer - a Broadway style "book" musical, and a straight play.

A Brief History

The Performing Arts Initiative has been a long time coming.  It was set into motion in 2004 when IUPUI Vice Chancellor Bill Plater put together English Professor Claude McNeal and Music Professor David Peters to “initiate” a plan for a performing arts entity.  McNeal and Peters brought aboard Professor Ken Davis, then Chairman of the English Department, to help in the early stages.  The three professors agreed that the need was great because Indianapolis is the largest city in America without a graduate or professional school level performing arts program. The organizing team agreed that for a city to be great in the arts, it must have a capability of teaching and training performing arts aspirants from kindergarten up to the highest professional level – Broadway!

This summer stock theatre will include internships and apprenticeship  opportunities in the arts, not only for Herron High students, but will also be open to other area high school students, as well as students from IUPUI, Butler, Ball State, University of Indianapolis, Marian University, Martin University, and other local colleges and universities.
